Particularly interesting and rare icon of the Archangel Michael that was made around 1850/1880 in one of the oldest Slavic monasteries: The Kiev Pechersk Lavra founded in 1050 (also known as the Monastery of the Caves of Kyiv).In the 19th century, Kiev was then part of the Russian Empire and this monastery depended on the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Saint Michael is represented here as Archi-Strategist and leader of the "Celestial Militia of the Angels of Good".
He proudly wears his armor and is armed with his saber of fire. He is the Archi-Strategist who will definitively defeat Satan and the forces of evil during the Apocalypse.
The icon is in very good original condition.
It is delicately painted with tempera in rich and warm tones. The border is finely chiseled and gilded.
