Object description :

"Neo-classical Barometer-thermometer, The Attributes Of Love, Transition Period 18th Century"
Vertical barometer-thermometer, in gilded linden wood with burnished and amati treated leaf. In pure neo-classical style, it is decorated with a fine work of symmetrical openwork sculptures, such as a couple of doves, olive branches abundantly provided with garlands of flowers, undulating ribbons, as well as pine cones without forgetting florets and foliage. The main part houses the atmospheric pressure barometer graduated according to Torricelli (1643) and Pascal (1647), signed by the optician André in Paris. A thermometer calibrated according to René Antoine Ferchault de Réamur (1683 - 1757) is located in the upper part, this one is annotated with personal mentions like ice cream without forgetting the notation in centigrades of Réaumur. It should be noted that this barometer is not provided with a simple colored cardboard but with a painting on a wooden panel. On the other hand this barometer is orphan of its bent mercury tube, due to the English physicist S Morland. It should be noted, on the back, the presence of a label of an optician reseller or restorer, Obscheswit 37 rue du petit carreau in Paris and his workshop rue neuf saint Sauveur still in Paris. This is accompanied by a handwritten inscription: Monté Sertet certainly the surname of one of its former owners. Parisian work from the Transition period.18th century, circa 1760-1770.
