Object description :

"Kannon Bosatsu On An Elephant, Japan, Meiji / Taisho Era, Bronze And Champlevé, Circa 1900"
The sculpture depicts Kannon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara) on an elephant. With his right hand, he performs the Abhaya mudra or gesture of fearlessness, which symbolizes care. In his left hand he holds a parchment. The Bodhisattva is seated on an elephant, which plays an important role in Buddhist symbolism. He is believed to have taken from the Buddha attributes such as strength, honor, patience, calm and wisdom. The sculpture is meticulously chiseled, which is particularly evident in Kannon's face, which seems to exude serenity. Kannon's robes and the elephant's saddle are adorned with decorations made using the champlevé technique, that is to say enamels of different colors embedded in cells carved in the bronze. Patinated bronze, champlevé enamel. Japan, Meiji / Taisho era, late 19th century / early 20th century. Signed on the underside. Height 47 cm, length 32 cm, width 15 cm. Good state of conservation, minor traces of time, on the leg of the elephant at the level of the saddle there is a visible crack on the bronze, seems to be a casting defect. Free delivery in EU. !
