18th To 19th Cty Philippines Stunning & Very Rare Collection Snake Vettebrae Cane, St François Ivory Head Pommel
Stunning and very rare collection snake vettebrae cane, certainly chained along a metal axis to stiffen it, and inlaid with small (horn?) cabochons , interspersed with carved ebony rings.
The magnificent intricately carved ivory pommel certainly represents head of St Francis of Assisi (°1182 - †1226), founder of Franciscan order.
We recognize him easily by its particular tonsure of this religious order, while the sculpture's style definitly refers to Spanish colonial stylization, certainly from Philippines origin.
Late18th or early XIXth century.
Condition: cracks on all snake vertebrae attest to their ancientness. Some lack of transparent to brown cabochons inlays in vertebrae holes, one of the vertebrae is cracked but no lack.
Very nice honey yellow patina for the head pommel
Size
Total height of the cane 86cm and diameter approx 15mm
Ivory knob height 6.5cm and diameters 4.5*5.5cm
