Antique Walking Stick, Mazeppa's Torment
An antique walking stick whose relief scene on the Knob is inspired by the famous episode of the torture of Mazeppa, a romantic hero popularized by Byron, Hugo, and Delacroix. It depicts the tragic figure of the young Ukrainian nobleman, tied naked to a galloping horse, a symbol of suffering, freedom, and destiny. The sturdy gilt metal pommel also allowed it to be used for self-defense. The shaft is made of rush. The ferrule is made of horn. The entire cane measures 35,82 inches. This robust walking stick, a unique collector's item, is perfectly usable. It dates from the late 19th century.
