This wooden sculpture represents Guanyin (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva). Guanyin is a Bodhisattva personifying compassion, his name means "observing sounds", that is, listening to requests. The wooden sculpture is covered with a thick polychromy composed of black lacquer, underpainting and tortoiseshell gilding. With his right hand, he performs the abhaja-mudra gesture, which in Buddhist mythology is the murdha of "fearless" (a-bhaja), symbolizing care, and with the left hand, the apana-mudra gesture symbolizing pure energy, purification, including of one's own body of toxins and impurities.
