Pair Of Mouse Bookends By H. Moreau
Artist: Hippolyte Moreau
This pair of original bookends by H. Moreau represents two little mice nibbling on a ball, no doubt of cheese, made of orange bakelite. The bases are in marble.
Son of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau (1797-1855), Hippolyte François Moreau was born in 1832 in Dijon. After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, he exhibited from 1863 to 1914 at the Salon of French Artists where he sent decorative subjects most often inspired by the 18th century. He won a medal at the 1878 World's Fair and another at the 1900 World's Fair. Among his famous sculptures is his 1880 statue of French mathematician Alexis Clairaut, which is now part of one of the facades of The city of Paris.
He died in 1927 in Neuilly-sur-Seine in France and today most of his works are in the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts.
