"Two Oils On Panel - Charles Peccatte, 20th Century"
Charles Marie PECCATTE (1870-1962)

Pendant of oils on wooden panels: AUTUMN LANDSCAPE WITH BIRKS and WINTER LANDSCAPE WITH LARGE TREES.

Dimensions: 55 x 30 cm and 57 x 28 cm.

Both works were cleaned and re-varnished by Maison ROLLIN in Rouen.

Charles Peccatte comes from an old Vosges family. He was born in Baccarat in 1870. At the age of 17, he exhibited a Bord de Meurthe at the 1st Saint-Dié salon. In 1888, he exhibited three paintings at the Nancy salon. His widowed mother moved to Paris with him and he frequented the Louvre and the Colarossi studio. Then he painted on the ground in Billancourt, in Chaville, in Brittany, in Vendée. In 1895, he painted in Crozant, in line with the painters he admired: Sisley, Pissaro, Cross and Seurat. From 1901, he exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-arts, at the Salon de Nancy, at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and at the Salon d'Automne where his success was confirmed; his works are acquired by collectors and by the State; they are sent to French exhibitions in London, Montreal, Turin, Rome. This post-impressionist evolves slowly. Fauvism, cubism, surrealism are foreign to him; he continues to paint landscapes in oil, brush or knife, but the light is always his fascination. He continued until 1930 to exhibit in salons and galleries. He died in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges in 1962. Bibliography: “Charles Peccatte”, Saint-Dié, Imprimerie Freisz, 1930, 8 p. Ronsin (Albert) “Charles Peccatte, the painter in the city”, in the Bulletin of the Philomatic Society Vosgienne, 1962, volume LXVI, p. 69-86. "Charles PECCATTE Lorraine artist" in La Revue Lorraine Populaire, n° 84 of October 1988 Most of his studio was auctioned by Me Guérin in Saint-Dié on 09/29/1996
