Lovely Broken Duchess, Napoleon III Period - Mid-19th Century

Broken Duchess in Louis XVI style, with lacquered wooden frame and retouched with an original Cream color paint. It consists of three elements: a Bergere, a Center Stool and a Bout de Pied which consists of an Armchair with a lower back. These different parts are separable and can be used independently. They can therefore be arranged harmoniously on either side of a living room, and can be adjusted as desired. The two Bergères with curved and enveloping backrests are topped with a ribboned knot and the armrests with cuffs are molded and finished in scrolls. The lower crosspieces are also sculpted, as are the corners of the feet, decorated with flowers. The latter, four in number per armchair, are all tapered and fluted, just like those of the Pouf. This central part with concave sides unites the whole with homogeneity and gives uninterrupted lines to this daybed once reconstituted. This cousin of the Sofa has seen its Tapestries completely redone, with care and in the old fashioned way, with finishes with Aged Nails, in the rules of the Decorative Art of its time. Thus the inside of the backrests is covered with a very pretty Toile de Jouy. It is printed with Scenes of Life common for this century, around water, such as paintings of Men Fishing or Women Washing... A plain "Paris-Texas Casamance" fabric was used for the repair of the exteriors of this Broken Duchess and for the making of its three thick removable cushions generously filled with Feathers. A Double Piping Finishes to emphasize their structure, note that they are removable, with the exception of the Center one. The fabrics used are made of linen and mostly cotton. The Straps and Pelotas bottoms are in excellent condition. We will appreciate the great adaptability of this Duchess with full cheeks which is an undeniable invitation to rest and relaxation. It skilfully combines Charm and Comfort, with its sublime Tapestries and its deep shapes in particular.
