This is a type of rapier that the Germans call "Feld Degen"
BLADE: Single-edged blade that begins after a 5.5 cm ricasso. False edge on the last 20 cm near the tip
Two narrow fullers on each side.
On one side you can read -:- - MEFECIT -:- -:- SOLINGEN - -:- engraved twice (once in each gutter)
On the other side -:- - WILHELM - -:- - ZU - NEOMEN - - :- also engraved twice.
The blade is oxidized. It seems that a little part just at the level of the edge has been the subject of a small old repair on 3 cm long, less than 2mm wide (probably an elongated chip old repaired ) This is hard to notice at global sight. I mention it for the sake of accuracy.
The signature clearly indicates that the blade comes from Solingen.
There was indeed a family of swormakers named Wilhelm in Solingen, but their work, of which I have found traces, is slightly later (early 17th century).
Length of the blade = 84.5 cm width at the ricasso 2.4 cm, thickness at the ricasso 5 mm
GUARD: It is a branch guard with protective shells. Two quillons in "S"
The branches meet at the level of the pommel.
POMMEL: Massive pommel in the shape of a bulb, with 4 slots.
GRIP: It is covered with a complex wire filigree : Fine wireof 5 steel strands, and double twisted copper wire filigree. The Turk's heads are made of iron filigree. They are in perfect condition.
This sword is an unusual model, very rarely seen on the market...
We will therefore forgive the oxidation linked to its age...
