Kono Fetish Mask - Bambara With Thick Crusty Patina
An important, antique fetish mask from the Kono secret society of the Bambara people in Mali, measuring 67 cm in length and covered in a very thick, crusty patina resulting from use. The Komo is a socio-religious institution shared by the Malinke and Bambara ethnic groups; it follows the N'Tomo (a society for the uncircumcised) and introduces the child to the knowledge required for his religious, cultural, social, and political education following circumcision. The term "Komo" refers to the complex—established in principle within every village—comprising the living and deceased members, the sanctuary and its altars (*boliw*), the presiding leader, and the mask itself. Although this society no longer exists, its primary function was social, aiming to promote fertility and land productivity, as well as to resolve conflicts of interest.
