Gustave Vidal, 1895-1966 - The Provençal road lined with plane trees. Oil on panel signed lower right, titled on the back. In this work all the technique and virtuosity of the Avignon master is exacerbated. He sets the scene, the moment, the season and the place. Summer is definitely here; the white stone of the houses is scorching, full of this hot summer sun at its zenith, gives us the time, probably the time to quench our thirst before sitting down to table under the trellis. The trellis, another symbol of Provence; this one firmly attached to the facades of the houses is capped with bignones in order to bring all the freshness required to these moments of sharing. The road, just as white, is tempered by the dense shade of the plane trees that border it. The first houses in the village, all windows and doors open with the curtains drawn, try to play with drafts in order to preserve a semblance of freshness. The decor is set up for the characters, a man with a jacket over his shoulder hurries to meet his two friends in traditional costume who are waiting for him at the edge of the village before taking refuge in this haven of tranquility. Born in 1895 in Avignon, Gustave VIDAL is a landscape and marine painter. Laureate of the Fine Arts of Avignon where he obtained numerous awards. He participates in Paris, at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he is a member. He painted landscapes of Provence, Camargue and Corsica. As this oil attests, today it is undoubtedly one of the best great Provencal landscapers of the early twentieth century. An excellent colourist, he models the dough with a knife like no one before; like a mason he builds his canvases in three dimensions. Compositions always of a correctness of an admirable balance. VIDAL's painting is alive and above all so terribly Provençal. Oil in superb condition perfectly restored, cleaning and varnish carried out in the rules of the art. Period frame. Width: cadre 63cm - panel 46cm Height: cadre 55cm - panel 38cm. The gallery has several other works by Gustave Vidal.
