Object description :

"A Louis XVI Giltwood Barometer With Scientific Attributes, Neo-classical, Late 18th Century"
Barometer with scientific attributes, pure neo-classical style, Louis XVI period, from the last quarter of the 18th century, in gilded limewood carved with burnished leaf and amati. Medallion-shaped, topped with a pediment, the latter is adorned with fine symmetrical clerestory carvings of scientific objects such as a globe and compass, crowned with an olive branch on a bed of foliage and flowers. The main part consists of an oval frame with a groove and terrace bordered on the periphery by rais-de-cœurs; knotted garlands of flowers decorate the base and top symmetrically, unifying the pediment to the frame. The latter houses the barometer with atmospheric pressure graduated according to Torricelli (1643) and Pascal (1647). The oculus showing the different barometric states on a blue background is slightly stigmatized by the weather. It should be noted that this barometer has lost its bent mercury tube, designed by English physicist S. Morland.
Neo-classical work from the last quarter of the 18th century, Louis XVI period.
Dimensions Height 85.9cm, Width 52.4cm.
