Born in Franklin in the Tennesee on November 29, 1858, she will study in San Francisco and at the Julian Academy with Emile Van Marcke and Félis Barrias .. She will end his life in Hungary in the city of Tata on February 21, 1923.
Many of his works were destroyed during the earthquake in San Francisco. Matilda Lotz was called the "American Rosa Bonheur". She will stay in Senlis in 1886 with her mother and two other American artists Elizabeth Strong and Mary Selfridge. She became the first woman in the history of the Académie de Paris to receive two gold medals and was rewarded during the exhibitions of the Salons 1882,1883,1884,1885. Baroness Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired one of her works depicting a St Bernard dog. She was not only an animal painter but an excellent portrait painter she realized that of the governor of California Leland Stanford founder of the university of the same name and of the celebrities of San Francisco. Mrs. Hearst, the mother of William Randolph Hearst will be his most faithful support. She traveled to Cairo and Algeria to paint other animals as well as local scenes. Emperor François Joseph will be one of his admirers and will acquire several of his works.
The Matilda Lotz Museum is located in Franklin.
