Large Inkwell In Pelican Bronze Aregenté And Crystal XIX
Artist: Benjamin Rabier
Very large cut crystal tank flanked by a sculpture of a pelican. Signature on the cap.
Object having been re-silvered and restored by a professional according to the rules of art but which remains fragile at the level of the hinge.
The vine leaf base is superb.
Rare and exceptional object signed by one of the masters of animal drawing.
He is considered as one of the greatest European animal drawers. The universe of Benjamin Rabier is strewn with animals. In 1906, Benjamin Rabier published an entirely illustrated edition of La Fontaine's Fables with Jules Tallandier. He also illustrated the Roman de Renart and the Histoire naturelle de Buffon. In 1921, Léon Bel used a drawing by Benjamin Rabier as the logo for his brand La vache qui rit (The Laughing Cow). This cow decorated fresh meat transport trucks during the First World War and was nicknamed the "Wachkyrie". But his most famous comic book character remains Gédéon the duck, whose stories were published between 1923 and 1939 in 16 albums. He also drew the famous whale of the Salins du Midi.
