Faience Dolphin Fountain From The Bordeaux Manufactory

Artist: Manufacture Jules Vieillard Bordeaux
Indoor wall fountain featuring a dolphin and a putto, made of barbotine or glazed earthenware, produced by the famous Jules Vieillard et Cie factory in Bordeaux during the reign of Napoleon III.
Upper section: a stylized, Baroque-inspired dolphin with its body upright. A putto also sits atop its head, holding a scallop shell above it that serves as a soap dish.
The dolphin’s mouth forms a water spout that originally held a small pewter or bronze spout.
Lower section: the basin, shaped like a scallop shell with wavy, multi-lobed edges, features a gradient of watery greens, pearly pinks, and ochres.
The factory founded on the Bacalan site in Bordeaux by Jules Vieillard was renowned for its artistic earthenware, its Orientalist decorations, and its polychrome slip glazes in the Rococo-style neoclassical tradition, which were highly prized during the Second Empire.
Condition: perfect on the front, but note that the back has been restored at the hanging point, which explains why a reasonable price is possible.
