FRANZ SNYDERS (ANTWERP 1579- 1657 ANTWERP) "The animal painter of the 17th century" It is the animal and still life painter who will have the most influence in his time. His pictorial repertoire will permanently mark the history of art. From 1608 to 1609 he was in Rome and was hosted by Jan Brueghel the Elder who introduced him to his patron, Cardinal Federico Borromeo. Snyders maintains artistic ties with Rubens, starting out as his assistant. Also he collaborated with Jacob Jordaens. He became an accomplished master in well-known works like “The Bear Hunt” at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin; “The Fox Hunt” from the Kunsthistorische Museum in Vienna, and “The Deer Hunt” from the Mauritshuis in The Hague. In his brutal hunting scenes, the animals all have personalities.
