GERARD DE LAIRESSE (LIÈGE 1640- 1711 AMSTERDAM) “The Poussin of his country” Student of his father and of B. Flémalle in Liège. He stayed in Bois-Le Duc in Utrecht, then in The Hague, and settled permanently in Amsterdam. It was in this city that, having become blind in 1689, he gave theory lessons on painting which he had printed under the title "Great Book of Painters". His extensive work includes portraits, subjects from the Bible, mythology and history, he painted, drawn and etched. His drawings reflect his academic taste well, especially those he executed carefully and coldly, with a pen mixed with blood (a way imitated to be mistaken for his pupil L. f. Dubourg). His quick projects are more casual.
