Victor De Grailly (1804-1887), View Of An Animated Port
Victor de Grailly (1804-1887), View of an animated port Oil on paper mounted on canvas, 24.5 x 32.5 cm Signed and dated on the left "1835". Victor de Grailly is a student of Jean Victor Bertin, his style is borrowed from the modernity that will characterize the painters of the barbizon school and a palette that clearly claims the influence of Bertin and his own master Pierre Henri from Valenciennes. The composition is reminiscent of the paintings of Lacroix de Marseille, still very popular in the first part of the 19th century. Victor de Grailly is relatively little represented in the great French museums (Magnin Museum) but his interest for the views of the new world, the Hudson river, the Niagara Falls ect .. which he copies from engravings earned him 'be in many American museums like the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
