"Henri Moncassin ...... Diane Raphael"
HD photos here Important stone sculpture (from Burgundy?) by Henri Raphaël Moncassin Henri-Raphaël Moncassin is the son of François Moncassin, a sculptor. It was therefore quite natural that he began his career in his father's studio before enrolling at the Toulouse School of Fine Arts. In 1904, he went to Paris and was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Antonin Mercié's studio. The following year, he won the second first prize in Rome for sculpture for Ceres Teaching Agriculture to Triptolemus. A logistical contender for six years in a row for first place, he was each time ousted following studio intrigues that made the artistic headlines of the time. 1 From 1905, he exhibited regularly at the Salons of the Society of French Artists in Paris where his submissions were noted on several occasions. In 1908, thanks to a travel grant, he spent a long time in Italy where he completed his training by visiting most of the major Italian museums. After the First World War, he created memorials to the victims of this conflict. He also produced busts of children and religious statues. He sculpted the busts of the playwright Paul Fort and the President of the Senate Jules Jeanneney. He became an officer of the academy in February 1914. He died in Paris on September 3, 1958.
