Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) - marble medallion depicting St Georges slaying the dragon

Carved in crystalline white marble, bearing the figure of St Georges and the signature FREMIET, this tondo presents the profile in low relief of the famous bronze of Frémiet on the same theme , with some variants adapted to the format.

Inscription in relief "DEUS FORTITUDO MEA, "God, my strenght", from the Psalms.

The bronze subject wax preserved at Orsay is dated 1891. Several bronze medals of this tondo are known including a smaller version at the Yale University Gallery.
