"Marble Bust Of A Child By Carlier"
Emile Joseph Nestor CARLIER 1849 - 1927 Bust of a young man in very fine-grained Carrara marble, sculpted in the round. This is a young boy dressed in a sailor suit with long hair; he must be between 6 and 7 years old, as boys' hair was cut at age 7 so they would become men. Direct carving of extreme finesse, making the different materials perceptible to the eye and touch. Unique piece, signed and dated E JH CARLIER 1888. Joseph CARLIER was born in Cambrai on January 3, 1849, and died in Paris on April 11, 1927. In 1869, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Jules Cavelier, then joined the studio of François Jouffroy. He then entered the Académie Julian in the studio of Henri Chapu, where he reunited with his friend from Valenciennes, Léon Fagel. In 1874, he made his debut at the Salon and exhibited there. Subsequently, every year, it has been very well represented in all the major French museums.
