Caffieri "children's" Louis XV Fireplace Grates
Artist: Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755)
A pair of small decorative andirons. Resting on scroll-shaped supports, they feature openwork foliage motifs in gilded chiseled bronze. The period mercury gilding alternates between a matte finish and a glossy, agate-polished finish, effectively highlighting the figures, which are cast in bronze with a brown patina. This model is identified in the inventory of the bronze sculptor Jacques Caffieri (1678–1755) as “two children drinking coffee”: a seated boy holding a pitcher in his right hand, facing a little girl holding a cup. The patinas are very well preserved, as is the rich mercury gilding, which shows no signs of wear!
