Silver-plated Bronze Betel Nut Box, Mindanao, Philippines—19th Century

A betel box (lutuan) with a rectangular shape and beveled sides, made of silver-plated bronze and decorated using the dinanderie technique.
The interior features a system of three movable compartments that open via four hinged lids.
This box retains its two side handles.

The dinanderie work, typical of the Maranao people of Mindanao Island (southern Philippines), features a rich decoration of scrolls and stylized plant motifs characteristic of their traditional repertoire.
The lid and outer surfaces are entirely covered with these motifs, contrasting sharply with the bronze’s natural brown patina and the silvery patina.
These ceremonial boxes were reserved for the aristocracy (datu). They were used to store the ingredients needed to prepare betel quid: areca nuts, betel leaves, slaked lime, and sometimes tobacco or spices.
