Large Renaissance-style Walnut Mantelpiece, 330 Cm High, 19th Century
An imposing Renaissance-style fireplace carved from walnut: this fireplace rests on sturdy jambs hidden behind two carved busts of bearded Atlanteans; the lintel is decorated with flowers in coffered panels and a frieze bearing a Latin inscription, which reads from the side and the front: “Corona serum, Hic lares hic quies hic veterum memoriae, filii filiorum,” evoking family continuity and the memory of ancestors.
The impressive mantelpiece features a more understated ornamentation but highlights the family coat of arms, consisting of clovers and a clawed bear’s paw surmounted by a helmet.
