A Traditional Ceremonial Weapon From Central Africa

We present this high-quality traditional African weapon, originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo—specifically, a short sword attributed to the Yakoma or Ngbandi-Sango peoples.

The forged iron blade is trapezoidal in shape, flaring out significantly toward the top and in the center. A wooden handle wrapped in copper wire ends in a rounded shape.

These pieces were often collected in Africa around 1880–1900. Our specimen, called a Basakpwa, is a prestige weapon whose function was primarily ceremonial. In particular, it served as a symbol of rank and distinction for chiefs and dignitaries.
