Parisian Hunting Sideboard, Pierre Roussel. 18th Century
Hunting sideboard stamped "Pierre Roussel." Parisian piece from the Regency or early Louis XV period, first half of the 18th century. Stamped on the front right side panel.
Notable for its small size, perfect balance, and high quality.
Pierre Roussel (Paris, 1723–1782) was admitted as a master cabinetmaker in 1745.
His reputation reached its peak as early as 1767, as confirmed by Salverte (The Cabinetmakers of the 18th Century, Their Works and Their Marks) who notes that Pierre Roussel, having been chosen as an expert to arbitrate a dispute between two colleagues, was considered one of the very best cabinetmakers of his time.
This assertion is echoed in the *Almanach d’indication générale ou du “vray mérite”* of 1769, which cites him as one of the foremost cabinetmakers in Paris.
His abundant and varied body of work embraced all the styles of the 18th century with elegance and refinement. Numerous Louis XV chests of drawers, veneered in rosewood or violetwood, are decorated with marquetry depicting flowers or ribbon bows. Lacquer and stylized Far Eastern landscapes are also frequently featured in his designs.
Pierre Roussel also specialized in hunting sideboards, crafted from superb solid oak from high-altitude forests.
Topped with its original marble, which features a restored crack.
