Orientalist School. Vincent Manago, "the Fellahs With The Chadouf"
Artist: Vincent Manago
Orientalist School. Oil on canvas, “The Fellahs with the Chadouf,” signed “Manago.V.” in the lower right corner. 46 × 54.5 cm. French School. Vincent Manago (1880–1936). A student of Jean-Paul Laurens (1838–1921) at the Académie Julian, it was undoubtedly from this master’s instruction that he acquired the art of composition, stark contrasts, and the balance of forms, evident in his depictions of Maghreb village streets (Street Scene in Algeria, 1903, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille), his landscapes of wadis and oases, sands and deserts, and palm groves traversed by caravans. His figures are lifelike, carefully observed in their postures and expressions; his compositions, despite a deliberate harshness, always remain harmonious. It is not known when he left for the Maghreb, but he established himself as a set designer in Tunis, then in Algiers. He exhibited in Marseille on several occasions, notably at the Colonial Exhibition (sources: Schurr’s Dictionary of Minor Masters of Painting).
