Large Gilded Wooden Regency Mirror With Knight's Helmet And Trophies Of Facing Birds
Large French mirror in carved and gilded wood – Regency period – Facing birds and a knight’s helmet as a trophy.
A significant French mirror in carved, openwork, and gilded wood, featuring a richly detailed architectural pediment, from the Regency period, early 18th century.
The pediment features a symmetrical composition rigorously arranged around a knight’s helmet trophy. Two facing birds, with outstretched wings, curved necks, and long, drooping tails, rest on side pedestals. Their arrangement follows an ornamental motif inherited from the French Renaissance, which was revived in the crown moldings of 17th- and 18th-century furniture and mirrors.
In the center, a knight’s helmet with an openwork visor, topped by a plume, is set within a group of war-related attributes including a cannon, artillery wheels, drapery, and elements of weaponry. The composition evokes trophies of war and chivalric imagery, symbols of bravery and military glory.
The decoration is complemented by broad foliage scrolls, flowers, acanthus scrolls, and finely engraved checkered backgrounds. The upper spandrel is crowned with a floral motif. The rectangular frame features a Bérain-style molding surrounded by foliage and sculpted cartouches.
This mirror illustrates the persistence of Renaissance ornamental compositions in French decorative arts of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, notably the motif of facing birds arranged on either side of a central crown.
Carved and gilded wood. A few small chips and imperfections in the carving, old cracks, touch-ups to the gilding, and surface wear. Original glass showing wear and discoloration of the tin coating.
