Christian Wilhelm Allers Drawing Art Nouveau Portrait Of A Little Boy Secession Jugendstil 1912

Artist: Christian Wilhelm Allers
Christian Wilhelm Allers (1857–1915) – Portrait of a child, 1912 – Secession/Jugendstil – “three crayons” drawing – 45 x 34 cm (framed 70 x 58) Superb portrait of a child signed and dated 1912 by Christian Wilhelm Allers (CW Allers), great German draftsman and illustrator of the late 19th and early 20th century. The sheet is distinguished by a rare mastery of modeling: vibrant flesh tones on tinted paper, assured anatomical construction (shoulder, arm, hand), hair rendered with a network of supple and skillful strokes, and above all, a direct, silent psychological presence, typical of the best portrait studies around 1900. Artistic context: Secession / Jugendstil (circa 1912). We are at the moment when the Germanic world is extending the momentum of the Secession and Jugendstil: primacy of drawing, elegance of line, modernity of the gaze directed at the intimate (childhood, everyday life), rejection of academic pathos. Here, modernity is not decorative in the manner of Klimt, nor expressionistic and nervous in the manner of Schiele: it is graphic, subtle, grounded in craftsmanship. This is precisely what gives this drawing its strength: a modern, demanding, and highly refined style. The drawing is created with three types of pencils on tinted paper: black/charcoal pencil for structure and shadows, sanguine/red highlights for flesh tones (cheeks, lips, hand), and light highlights (white chalk or blending stump/luminous retouching) for accents (eyes, volumes). The overall effect is a delicate, light texture with highly controlled modeling. It is a portrait of an androgynous child, characterized by its hairstyle and soft features. The choice of pose (nude bust, hand resting on the shoulder) reinforces the studio study character, poised between intimacy and an ideal of purity of form. Signed “CW Allers” and dated “1912” (visible lower right, see photos). Approximately 45 x 34 cm (sheet size/sight size, oval). Approximately 70 x 58 cm (dimensions with frame). Oval frame with gilt fillet. Some glass reflection marks and very small traces of white chalk, otherwise in good condition.
