Ruby-red Enameled And Gilded Glass Box — Bohemia, 19th Century
An elegant rectangular box with beveled edges, made of ruby-red glass and adorned with a delicate polychrome and gilded enamel decoration.
On the lid and the various sides, large scalloped cartouches feature delicate floral scrolls surrounding rosettes in light tones. Coils of gilded foliage accentuate these compositions, while small plant motifs dot the red backgrounds. The contrast between the depth of the ruby hue, the transparency of the glass, and the delicacy of the ornamentation lends the piece a striking decorative presence.
The lid, with beveled edges, is mounted on a gilded metal frame encircling the opening. A shield-shaped keyhole adorns the front.
Based on its decoration and craftsmanship, this box is likely linked to 19th-century Bohemian glassware. A charming object, whose meticulous design and play of light highlight the work of the enameled glass.
