Mathurin Janssaud 1857–1940, “boat In A Storm,” Oil On Cardboard
Artist: Mathurin Janssaud
A rare oil on cardboard painting by Mathurin Janssaud (1854–1940) depicting a boat in a nighttime storm. It is an extremely refined small-format sketch, executed with skillful and lively brushwork. The sailboat riding the wave, with the moon emerging from the clouds, creates a very realistic atmosphere; the faint glow of the lighthouse on the right indicates the proximity of land. This painting likely dates from the early part of the artist’s career; he is best known for his pastels.
Good overall condition, no wear, no repainting; the varnish is very yellowed and needs cleaning. There is a small missing section in the lower left corner, likely due to a previous frame.
