Joseph Mougin (1876–1961) – Art Deco Vase In Glazed Stoneware With Geometric Decoration – Model 306 J
An ovoid-shaped glazed stoneware vase with a rounded shoulder and a short, widely flared neck, designed by Joseph Mougin (1876–1961), a renowned French ceramicist associated with the Mougin workshops in Nancy.
It features a remarkable geometric design in slight relief, consisting of a succession of polygonal compartments and interlocking triangular motifs, forming a particularly rhythmic composition characteristic of the aesthetic explorations of the Art Deco period.
The decoration is distinguished by a striking contrast of materials and colors. Against a satin-like brown-black background, glazed areas in rich shades of coppery red, golden brown, and orange stand out, enlivened by crystallization effects and metallic sheens.
These compartments are delineated by fine olive-green fillets that highlight the geometric contours and accentuate the depth of the decoration. The contrasts between the satin-finish surfaces and the glossy enamels lend the piece a remarkable decorative presence.
The vase’s generous and balanced silhouette, combined with the precision of its ornamentation, reflects the renewal of the French decorative arts during the early decades of the 20th century.
The base bears the incised marks “Mougin Nancy France,” the model number “306 J,” and a partially visible designer’s inscription.
A beautiful piece from the Mougin workshops, particularly striking for the richness of its copper-toned glazes, the precision of its relief decoration, and the balance of its proportions.
