Bronze Incense Burner, Japan, 19th Century.
Large Bronze Koro Incense Burner - Japan - 19th century / Meiji era - Dragon-Turtle / Minogame
Description:
Large incense burner (koro) in bronze with a brown patina, a 19th-century Japanese piece (late Edo period or Meiji era). This work of art and scholarship depicts a major mythological creature of East Asia: the Minogame, the legendary thousand-year-old tortoise, here depicted with a powerful dragon’s head. The creature is depicted in motion, its mouth wide open, its legs adorned with finely chiseled scales, and displaying its characteristic long tail with flowing, undulating strands—the ultimate symbol of longevity, wisdom, and prosperity. The removable shell serves as a perforated lid. Once incense is lit inside, the smoke escapes spectacularly through both the slits in the lid and the dragon’s open mouth.
