Biography:
Véronique Vermeil (1938–2017)
A French painter and sculptor, Véronique Vermeil developed a distinctive body of work, inspired by her travels, her discovery of other cultures, and her constant exploration of color and materials. Her artistic journey took her from Paris to Tuscany, then to Provence, Spain, and as far as Africa and French Guiana—all regions whose landscapes, light, and forms fueled her inspiration.
After making her debut in the Parisian art scene, particularly in Montmartre, she caught the attention of collectors and began exhibiting at several galleries in the Latin Quarter. She then spent about fifteen years in Tuscany, where she exhibited in Florence and actively participated in the local art scene. In the 1970s, she founded the Okto group with her friend, the painter Alain Bonnefoit, bringing together several artists around a shared creative vision and spirit of exchange. She was also a member of the Oblique and 109 groups.
Her painting is distinguished by an expressive use of color, organized into broad swaths and punctuated by powerful lines. Initially oriented toward abstraction, her work gradually evolved toward a refined figurative style, without ever sacrificing the chromatic intensity that characterizes her visual language. Luminous yellows, intense blues, deep greens, and vibrant reds compose landscapes and visions where sensation takes precedence over a faithful depiction of reality. For part of her career, the artist mixed her own paints, reflecting her interest in the material and expressive properties of paint.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Véronique Vermeil expanded her creative scope to include sculpture.
Véronique Vermeil, who passed away in 2017, leaves behind a body of work marked by the freedom of her artistic journey, the richness of her experiences, and an instantly recognizable palette. Spanning colorful abstraction, evocative landscapes, and memorial sculptures, her work reflects a personal artistic exploration in which travel became a constant source of artistic renewal.
