19th-century Doll's Or Master's Cabinet, Louis Philippe Style, Mahogany Veneer, In Very Good Condition
A magnificent doll's wardrobe or master's wardrobe made of mahogany veneer.
This exceptional piece of furniture is fully in keeping with the Louis-Philippe style prevalent in the 19th century.
This piece, with its remarkable dimensions (83 x 46.5 x 20 cm), has come down to us in very good overall condition.
Its front opens with two doors that reveal an ingeniously optimized original interior space.
The piece is sold complete with all three of its interior shelves made of unfinished wood.
The locking mechanism is period-correct and consists of a wrought-iron lock in perfect working order.
This lock is operated by its original key, delicately adorned with a decorative tassel featuring two-tone fringe.
The cabinetmaking stands out for the careful selection of high-quality mahogany veneer.
The artisans created a superb symmetrical “butterfly wings” or open-leaf design on the front doors.
The upper section is crowned by an inverted ogee cornice, a feature very characteristic of this artistic period.
The front legs of the piece feature an elegant beveled cut that softens the structure.
The piece rests on a solid plinth base supported by small, slightly molded corner feet.
The cabinet’s side panels feature vertical grain veneer, offering a beautiful depth of color beneath its patina.
The back of the cabinet reflects traditional craftsmanship with a period-style central panel assembly.
The reverse side of the doors highlights the internal wood structure and attests to the authenticity of the cabinetry.
The metal housing of the wrought-iron lock attests to the great care taken with the technical finishes.
The base and underside of the cabinet confirm a sound structure, free from major restorations or modern alterations.
Details on the designers and style:
The Louis-Philippe style (1830–1848) marked the rise of high-end bourgeois cabinetmaking and moved away from the concept of an individual designer or sole artisan in favor of highly skilled cabinetmaking workshops.
The pieces from this period do not bear the signature of a single designer but are the result of the collective expertise of Parisian workshops or major regional production centers.
These artisans drew inspiration from design compendia published at the time to standardize clean lines, solid forms, and the use of precious woods such as mahogany.
This master’s piece—or large-scale doll’s furniture—served as a demonstration model to prove a journeyman’s technical excellence or to adorn the salons of high society.
