Regency-style Armchair In Carved And Gilded Wood, With A "reine" Backrest, 19th Century

Artist: Anonyme
This carved and gilded wooden bergère armchair, of remarkable elegance, fits perfectly into the tradition of great Parisian designs.

Its high “à la Reine” backrest has a straight, flat shape, making it ideal for placement against a wall.

The delicately curved front panel captivates the eye with its rich decoration.

At its center is a magnificent, blooming shell, surrounded by finely executed, sinuous foliage.

The side panels, meanwhile, remain straight but are distinguished by delicate carving against a lattice background.

The arched base, characteristic of the style, gives the chair a dynamic and airy silhouette.

Each front leg is topped with a generous acanthus leaf carved in relief.

They end elegantly with a leafy scroll resting gracefully on the floor.

The slightly recessed armrests are also adorned with a meticulously crafted leaf-and-shell motif.

This piece is a testament to the high-quality Parisian craftsmanship of the 19th century.

It draws loose inspiration from—yet remains technically faithful to—the Regency style of the early 18th century.

At that time, renowned cabinetmakers such as Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot and Michel Cresson popularized these motifs of stylized shells and checkered backgrounds.

Although this bergère is a retrospective celebration of their craftsmanship, it retains their perfect proportions and meticulous carving.

The original gilding beautifully highlights the depth of the motifs and the play of light on the wood.

The seat is upholstered in a golden damask fabric with refined floral motifs, complemented by matching trimmings. This piece is in very good overall condition.

Its generous dimensions provide a comfortable seat: 105 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 73 cm deep.
