Anthropomorphic Bronze Sculpture In A Satirical Style, Depicting A Humanized Dog; Height: 22.5 Cm
The work depicts a anthropomorphic dog, standing on a circular bronze pedestal.
The animal, evoking the expressive features of a griffin or a schnauzer, sports a thick mustache and bushy eyebrows.
It is depicted smoking a long pipe.
The canine figure is dressed in the traditional attire of a winegrower or peddler.
He is clad in a long, draped woolen coat and wears a misshapen felt hat.
In one hand, he firmly holds a miner’s lantern, an accessory reminiscent of night work or guard duty.
In his other hand, he holds a long wooden handle, resembling a cane or a traditional tool.
The rear structure of the piece serves a dual functional purpose.
The figure carries on his back a large wicker basket, faithfully carved from a single block of wood.
At his feet rests an open barrel, whose interior cavity features a patina with shimmering highlights.
These two deep receptacles allow the work to be used as a trinket tray or a pipe holder.
This creation is in the spirit of the humorous animal bronzes of the early 20th century.
The nuanced brown patina highlights the fine details of the wickerwork and clothing.
The iconography is reminiscent of works by artists specializing in anthropomorphic figures, such as the Austrian workshops (Vienna Bronzes) or French sculptors of genre scenes.
