Neo-egyptian Bronze Sculpture Of A Bust Of Queen Cleopatra Nitocris, 19th Century

Sculpturein the Neo-Egyptian* (Egyptian Revival) style, made of bronze with two patinas (black and gold), depicting the bust of a queen wearing the adorned with a diadem featuring a cabochon and a wide plastron necklace; most likely the bust of Cleopatra or Nitocris**, dating from the 19th century.

This bust is in very good condition and is highly decorative, of superb quality.

* The Neo-Egyptian style, a modern interpretation of the art and culture of ancient Egypt, has undergone various periods of influence since the 19th century, leaving a lasting mark on the decorative arts. The Neo-Egyptian style emerged after Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign (1798–1801), which sparked a craze for ancient and Pharaonic Egypt in Europe. The scientists and artistswho accompanied Napoleon’s army documented the treasures of ancient Egypt, leading to a wave of publications, such as the monumental *Description of Egypt*. This interest influenced architecture, fashion, and the decorative arts, giving rise to the Egyptomania style. Neo-Egyptian decorative arts are characterized by the use of motifs and symbols directly inspired by ancient Egypt .

** Nitocris was a semi-legendary queen of the Sixth Dynasty. According to tradition, she is said to be the first female “pharaoh” (king of Upper and Lower Egypt) in the history of ancient Egypt. For scholars who recognize this queen, her reign lasted between one andfive years: 2152 to 2150 B.C. She is also known as the Queen of Babylon.
