Antique Empire-style Mahogany Armchair Attributed To Jacob Desmalter Fhg.
Artist: Attribuée à François, Honoré, Georges, Jacob Desmater.
Empire-period bergère, “Return from Egypt” style, made of varnished Cuban mahogany.
This bergère is characteristic of the furniture designed and created by Jacob Desmalter in the early 19th century.
The armrests feature caryatids shaped like female faces, wearing Egyptian headdresses and with wings extending backward to form an openwork design. The front legs taper to a point and are topped with lion’s heads.
The backrest is rectangular and slightly concave. The legs are sabre-shaped at the rear. The bergère still needs to be upholstered. I have an upholsterer who is a “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” (Best Craftsman of France) who can carry out the work, the cost of which is to be borne by the buyer.
The seat is not stamped.
