Napoleon I At The Time Of His Abdication By Paul Delaroche

This color engraving (heliogravure), printed by Braun & Company based on the painting by Paul Delaroche, is a rare depiction of Emperor Napoleon I in a moment of despondency, overwhelmed and weary in his small apartment at the Château de Fontainebleau just before his abdication (April 1814), as the fall of the Empire was imminent. Napoleon I gave his all in this final battle, as he always did; he was defeated by a coalition of his enemies and betrayed in part by his generals’ lack of initiative or obedience in carrying out his orders. The engraving is simply framed by a gold-leaf-gilded mold that highlights the tragic atmosphere of the scene (engraving from a private collection). In perfect condition.
