Grand Medal Of Napoleon III And Queen Victoria - Crimean War - 1854
Large Medal of Napoleon III and Queen Victoria—Crimean War—1854—Hart
A large, important commemorative medal in silver-plated copper, created in 1854 by the Belgian medalist Laurent Joseph Hart (1810–1860) to mark the Franco-British alliance during the Crimean War.
On the obverse, the side-by-side profiles of Emperor Napoleon III and Queen Victoria, both crowned with laurel wreaths, accompanied by their names. The engraver’s signature, “HART FECIT,” appears on the right side.
On the reverse, a remarkable relief composition depicting the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, with its dome and minarets, set against an imposing military trophy. The trophy features banners bearing the Ottoman crescent, spears, bladed weapons, cannons, shields, helmets, breastplates, drums, and various items of military equipment, evoking the armies allied with the Ottoman Empire.
The inscription “TO THE GLORY OF THE ALLIED ARMIES” is accompanied by the dates of the Battles of the Alma (September 20), Balaklava (October 25), and Inkermann (November 5, 1854).
This medal commemorates the first victories of the French, British, and Ottoman armies against Russia during the Crimean War.
A beautiful large-sized specimen, notable for the finesse and richness of its engraving.
