Spain, Manises or Valencia, 19th century
A large ceramic dish with a gold metallic sheen on an ivory background, accented with cobalt blue. From the center—decorated with a harpy standing out in cobalt blue against a spiral-patterned gold background—sixteen rays extend outward, each adorned with a frieze of stylized motifs. The reverse side of this platter features a design of concentric circles.
Diameter: 46 cm; in good overall condition, with minor chips.
This piece is characteristic of production using the technique passed down by Muslims who had settled in Spain since the 8th century, and reflects the influence of Mudéjar art following the Christian Reconquista. After an initial high-temperature firing of the blue decoration, the metallic luster was set through a second firing at a low temperature.
