Zuzana ćalupová (1925–2001) – Children's Carnival In Venice
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Hand-signed.
- Zuzana Calupová (1925–2001), affectionately nicknamed the “mother of a thousand children,” was one of the leading figures in international naïve art, associated with the famous Kovačica School in the Vojvodina region. Of Slovak origin and self-taught, she began her artistic career in the 1950s by creating traditional embroidery and tapestries, before moving on to oil painting on canvas—a medium that quickly earned her worldwide recognition.
The most characteristic element of her pictorial world is the omnipresence of childhood; Zuzana systematically placed children at the center of her works, going so far as to give adults childlike features, distinguishing them only by the presence of mustaches. Her compositions, brimming with vibrant colors and ornamental details and imbued with a profound innocence, evoke fairy-tale illustrations; they reflect rural traditions, winter festivities, and the daily life of her community.
Beyond her commercial success and numerous international exhibitions—notably in Paris, New York, and Zurich—Calupová distinguished herself through her humanitarian work. She has donated numerous works to charitable causes, including a monumental piece created for the Red Cross in Geneva, as well as a famous Christmas illustration published by UNICEF. Her artistic legacy remains a shining testament to innocence, optimism, and cultural roots, which continues to captivate collectors around the world.
- Dimensions of the artwork (unframed): 21 x 26 cm / 35 x 40 cm with an exclusive, custom-made frame.
