The force of the sometimes contradictory sensations associated with spring coexist in a beautiful pictorial struggle across the entire length and breadth of the canvas: the inexorable melting of the streams is, ultimately, the slow agony of the snow rising to the glacial peaks; the fog clinging to the forest is only the last veil before the summer sun. As in "Winterreise," the fragrant promise of spring seems both immediate and distant, and the allusions to a changing nature confuse the frozen and intrepid viewer.
