19th-century Moroccan Dish: Ghotar

Set of 3 large polychrome earthenware ghotars.
Origin: Morocco, Fez, 19th century
The set is in good overall condition; note that there are some areas where the glaze is missing, and one piece has a crack.

The top ghottar—blue, turquoise, and brown decoration. 39 cm
In the center is a small geometric star with interlacing patterns, formed by a network of crisscrossing lines.
Surrounding it is a large composition in the shape of a star-shaped rosette with several lobes.
The lobes feature motifs reminiscent of leaves, stylized flowers, or small birds and arabesques.
A series of brown and white interlacing patterns forms a sort of lacework around the rosette.
The outer border is itself divided into small geometric panels

The middle ghottar—yellow, green, and blue—measures 33 cm.

  • The center is occupied by an octagonal medallion filled with a blue-and-white crisscross grid, creating a lattice effect.
  • Surrounding this center is a series of triangles and radiating compartments.
  • Each compartment contains stylized plant motifs: leaves, small flowers, and scrolls.
  • The green shapes form a sort of network of stars and petals.
  • The yellow-beige serves as the background and brings a lot of light.
  • The blue border frames the entire design quite clearly.

  • The lower ghottar—a large turquoise and blue rosette. (with a crack) 39 cm

    • The design is organized around a large central rosette.
    • Several almond-shaped and ogival forms interlock with one another.
    • There are numerous interlaced plant motifs, with leaves and arabesques extending from one shape to the next.
    • Small geometric lattice patterns appear in several medallions.
    • Elements shaped like drops, petals, or leaves give rhythm to the composition.
    • Light turquoise dominates, accompanied by cobalt blue, white, and a few touches of green.
    • The outer border echoes the geometric pattern with a series of small compartments.
