Burgundy Convertible Desk – A Convertible Piece Of Furniture In The Transitional Style, Second Me

An exceptional and finely crafted convertible piece of furniture dating from the second half of the 19th century, known as a “Burgundy-style” convertible desk. The piece displays a transitional style between the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods and is distinguished by its elaborate mechanism, its carefully selected precious veneers, and its gilded bronze fittings.

At first glance, the piece appears to be an elegant two-drawer chest. However, it conceals an ingenious system of drawers, movable panels, and a retractable writing surface.

The key slots concealed on the sides beneath the small bronze finials are particularly ingenious. They allow two drawers on each side to be opened, providing additional storage space.

The true transformation occurs thanks to the two upper pull rings on the front. Pulling them slightly triggers a mechanism that raises the rear section of the tabletop via a spring system. A small writing surface then appears, featuring three drawers on each side and an open central niche with a mirror.

The front section of the tabletop can then be folded forward to serve as a writing surface. Inside, one discovers a particularly remarkable veneer, with carefully matched wood grain patterns.

Its numerous functions, high-quality craftsmanship, and finely crafted details make this transforming piece a remarkable example of the art of historic furniture. Even when closed, it captivates with its elegant form, the lively pattern of its veneers, and its decorative gilded bronze fittings.

Condition

The piece has been restored and is ready for installation. The shellac finish has been renewed and beautifully highlights the exquisite, precious veneers.

All mechanical functions have been checked and are fully operational. The retractable writing tray with its spring mechanism, the fold-down writing surface, and all drawers function perfectly.
