Small Silver Vinaigrette With An Interior Grid Made Of Vermeil. 19th Century
Mini silver vinegar dish shaped like a purse or small handbag, with an interior vermeil grid that pivots on a hinge featuring an openwork, engraved floral motif. It held a small sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or salts. It dates from the early 19th century. These small boxes were often made in England. The hallmarks are visible on the inside lid of the box. The maker’s mark “TS” corresponds to a silversmith active in the early 19th century, such as Thomas Shaw, who was registered in 1822. The second hallmark is the city mark (such as the Birmingham anchor). It measures 2.7 cm long by 2 cm wide and approximately 1 cm high. It is in good condition.
