Antique Painting Battle Scene Oil On Canvas XVIII Century
Oil on canvas.
The scene depicts a battle between an army of Moors and white soldiers, defending a fortification from which cannons are firing, while in the background, a white city rises atop a promontory.
Set near the sea, with several of the invaders’ ships heading toward the coast, the scene centers on the capture of the Moorish king, depicted in the center on his white horse, with a look of dismay on his face as he is surrounded by enemy soldiers attempting to unseat him, while his own men try to defend him.
The atmosphere of the scene is dominated by dust and cannon smoke, which cast an earthy haze over all the figures, even where the colors of their garments would normally be more vivid.
Restored and re-painted, the painting is presented in a period-style frame.
