Antique Painting Folly Oil On Canvas Italy Late XVIII Century
Oil on canvas. Second half of the 18th century.
A section of a large, ruined architectural structure fills the entire scene: a portico surmounted by a balustrade, overgrown with plants, surrounds a courtyard where various ordinary people go about their daily activities. A bright blue sky stretches above the structure, and light filters through one of the arches, creating a play of light and shadow beneath the portico.
On the back of the stretcher is an attribution to Gaetano Vetturali (1701–1783), although the quality of the figures here appears superior to those of the Lucca-based artist, who made a name for himself in his region for his architectural capriccios of great visual impact.
The painting is presented in a gilded frame in the appropriate style.
